Ice Balls

A rare and beautiful sight greeted two walkers on the Finish island of Hailuoto recently.

Amateur photographer Risto Mattila and his wife were walking along one of the island's beaches when they spotted egg-like balls of ice that had washed up on the shoreline.

The balls of ice were created by subzero temperatures and strong winds that whipped up water and snow. As the water was battered by the wind it froze into spherical shapes the amazing results can be seen below.
